One third of the way there

We’ve just learned that the federal Conservative party has reversed it’s decision to review (and potentially revoke) tax credits in bill C-10.

Canadian artists scored a victory Tuesday after Stephen Harper abruptly pulled the plug on a controversial clause in Bill C-10 that would have given government free rein to censor film and television projects it found morally offensive.

–quoted from The Globe and Mail

We are very pleased to hear about this decision, as it is one of the three main reasons we were convinced that the Conservative party had something against us. It’s a step in the right direction.

Now that they’ve acknowledged this policy was not appropriate, we are still asking ourselves: Why did they have it there in the first place? We are unconditionally pleased that the policy has been dropped, but confused about the reasons why today it had moved from a matter of confidence in May to a non-issue only six months later. I guess more people must feel it’s not a niche issue any longer.

“I don’t have any intention of going ahead with it if we don’t have something that will clearly benefit taxpayers and the industry,” [Harper] told reporters. The platform says that the bill is being abandoned to address concerns from the industry.

–quoted from The Vancouver Sun

Now we’ve two other topics left to discuss. Unfortunately it looks like we may have to settle for one out of three, since our second point – the overreaching copyright legislation of Bill C-61 – seems to be firmly entrenched in the same platform document, and news articles like this aren’t showing a new media industry with a strong future.
