When Life Imitates Powerthirst

Seeing the evolution of Powerthirst from a viral video by my favourite local comedy troupe into an actual honest-to-goodness product is pretty surreal. But perhaps the fact that you can order packets of a fizzy, delicious powdered drink named after the Powerthirst videos is the least weird part of this video’s legacy. This almost seems inevitable after the fictional energy drink, Brawndo, from the movie Idiocracy was released two years ago and featured a Powerthirst-esque ad made by Picnicface.

The original video has spawned tons of fan-made videos and evenĀ  an ad for a Ford Truck sale that blatantly stole the template from Picnicface for an unfunny parody of their parody. After two years, Powerthirst has had over 18-million views.

I guess the only thing that surprises me about the actual Powerthirst beverage is that it wasn’t released sooner…and that it doesn’t come in a gun-shaped bottle.

If you’re one of the 9 million people who only saw the original, the sequel to Powerthirst is even better.
